Stadium Snack

As we New Yorkers all know, this is the last year of existence for two of its Great Baseballian Landmarks. Indeed, the fate of the Yankee and Shea Stadiums we all know and love loom in the fateful shadows of the bigger, better stadiums being constructed next door. The city will not let its citizens forget these imepnding realities, what with the commorative magazines, cups, shirts, flags, NYU graduation caps, headline news features, teary team speeches, etc.

But one tidbit of history captured my special attention today as I was reading over the shoulder of some guy's NY Post on the train. On this day in 1965, The Beatles performed the first ever stadium concert at the Mets' Shea, with a then-record-setting attendance of tens of thousands of screaming girls and boys. 55,600, to be quite exact.

On my first (and most likely last) visit to Shea in June, I thought of this day. I think of it again now.
